Documented Representations: A Message for Our First Edition

Olyvia Bendza

Dear Reader,

What our goal has been since day one is to stay true to the student body.

We have all different types of representations of what it means to be a Mountie just in our newspaper. From reflections on AI to autumn poetry to even a Crumbl Cookie review, this edition alone spans across a diverse field of interests and opinions, which we value.

Although we are dressed in the same uniforms, take the same core classes, and blend into each other at times, all of us are incredibly different. We have learned that finding the proper representation (any Mountie willing to share their voice) and staying connected with students is the best way to stay true.

We are reaching this goal one step at a time by putting our best foot forward, emphasizing the importance of a creative and collaborative space, and most importantly we are opening up to change. I emphasize that last point especially because of the amount of change that our newspaper has experienced.

Although The Hilltopper has been around for decades and is engraved into our school’s history, its revival is young. I became a staff writer my freshman year, which just so happened to be the year that our paper made its comeback from a group of dedicated Seniors. Each hallway was marked with at least one flier promoting each edition, teachers and students discussed articles in class, members participated in prestigious journalism workshops, and new members were added every day.

From there, we expanded to much more than just articles. Students submitted interviews, creative pieces, podcasts, photography, and even vlogs; giving us a glimpse into the unique perspectives of many different Mounties from a different angle. Throughout all these changes, The Hilltopper still managed to stay true to the student body.

I can’t sit here and lie and say that I wasn’t nervous about upholding the reputation of The Hilltopper because I one-hundred percent was. However, I can say that our team of amazing writers, editors, website designers, and of course our moderator, Mrs. D, are a group of inquisitive, courageous, and exceptionally dedicated individuals who have replaced any ounce of fear I had with a heap of pride.

I dedicate this editorial to the Mounties who continuously support The Hilltopper to reach our fullest potential each day, and who have advocated for staying true to the student body. I wish everyone the best of luck this school year and as always, an enjoyable read.

Thank you,

Olyvia Bendza
