Shop Small

Why is shopping for small businesses for the holidays much better than big businesses?

Happy Holidays from your good friend Nadia! By the title, you can probably get a pretty good idea of what I will be talking about. Little companies vs. Big companies. You see, Big companies won’t notice your purchase over the next couple of months, but small businesses will, and it might even change their life.

Most small businesses depend on their jobs to buy groceries and pay for their people at home. Yet, the people who own the larger companies are out buying another house not even caring who even gave them the money in the first place. “Hey, they are giving us the stuff we want”, BUT SO CAN SMALL BUSINESSES! According to fundera.com, small businesses generate $68 of local economic return for every $100 that is spent with them. For those who don’t understand, that basically means small businesses don’t generate as enough money as they should. If you can just spend a simple $10 a month on a local business (small business), over $9.3 billion would be directly returned to our economy. So not only you are helping our neighbors and community, you are helping the state, the country, or the big picture, the world!

Bigger stores follow a marketing strategy and mostly look the same no matter where they could be located, “Familiarity can come at the cost of variety” or “The cookie cutter style”. Small and independent stores offer services and products that are surrounded and reflect on the people they serve. In other words, if you are looking for a good quality bar of soap for your friends and family this Christmas, there are great independent businesses that focus just on that, but stores like Target, don’t have that special quality the local stores do! They just want to sell, sell, sell. Independent stores want to specifically help you, and make your life a bit easier. You can even customize! Try this: Look at a candle at TJ Maxx that has wax decor in it (like a whipped cream candle), now when you can, at a flea market or a festival that has little stores showing, compare that candle to the TJ Maxx candle. You will obviously see a difference.

Additionally, if you are looking for a job, a small store will most likely hire you! They need all the help they can get to make their business successful, and to keep more money in the community! They will enjoy you and cherish your time with you! If you are looking for a job at Walmart, that’s fine with me, but you should realize that it won’t be the same love from a local business store.

In conclusion, Independent businesses are better than large ones for the holidays because they work harder, they are the ones who care, and they are the ones who have the best quality for your loved ones. As well, a gift from a small business is always going to be a great gift because It comes from the heart. One can tell that you actually put in some thought and effort, seeing as that independent stores focus on that specific gift. Okay, now come on! Since you already read the whole thing, look at some local stores already! Give them some love! You don’t even have to buy from them! For instance, if you are scrolling on TikTok and stop by a marketing video for a small business, just give them a like, comment, or even better, a share! It would make such a big difference in their life just for that one little action. We are the future Mounties, so now change it.
