When the Leaves Fall

As the bright summer season comes to an end, we recognize the new season of Autumn. The air turns crisp. The leaves begin to fall. The days get shorter and shorter leading us into a state of hibernation. There's a unique warmth that emerges during this time. Does it come from pumpkin-scented candles? Or from soft blankets? Or maybe from gooey chocolate chip cookies that lay on the counter? Or is it the sense of togetherness and new beginnings?

When the leaves fall, I feel at peace. This feeling of tranquility comes from the combination of dim candlelight, chunky sweaters, cozy desserts, and that fresh feeling in the air. Not many seem to understand this feeling quite like I do. They say things like, “Yeah but what about Summer?” and “Fall is just a season.” But not to me. Autumn is made up of these little features that seem so insignificant but truly have an impact on us, even if you don't realize it.

When the leaves fall, the trees change. They go through their cycle, just like us. Autumn is a time when we change too. It affects our emotions, behaviors, and even relationships. Just like the trees, we can declutter, start fresh, and begin a new chapter. For example, we go back to school. We return to a busy schedule. We feel as if there is no time to relax. But, in those moments when we do get to relax, the smallest things mean the most. Turning on the football game, laughing with friends, eating warm chili with your favorite chips, and even stepping outside just to breathe in the fresh fall air. These moments make the season happy and worthwhile.

When the leaves fall, there are also feelings of uncertainty. Even though the Autumn season is filled with cozy and happy feelings, it can bring about loneliness and unwelcoming ideas. People find themselves missing the bright colors of summer, yearning for days when they are out of school, soaking up the sun, and feeling like their best selves. When the sun sets earlier, people feel trapped. They feel confined in this season, stuck in a cycle. While this might be how you feel, I do not agree.

When the leaves fall, I am my best self. I am joyful, comfortable, and truly stable. As you may know by now, Autumn is my favorite season. The vibrant hues and warm glows make me feel an indescribable feeling that no other season provides me with. While the change of seasons can be daunting, remember the good parts, the little things.
